Stanford CASBS Fellowship 2027–28: A Year of Research at Stanford for Established Scholars
If you're an established scholar who has dreamed of a full year to think, write and work on your boldest ideas, the CASBS Fellowship at Stanford is one of the most prestigious opportunities in the world. Each year, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences invites leading scholars from around the globe to spend an academic year in residence on Stanford's campus in California.
What Is the CASBS Fellowship?
CASBS is a research centre at Stanford University focused on understanding behavior, society and institutions. Its fellowship supports high-impact, curiosity-driven projects, giving scholars time and space away from teaching and administrative work.
Fellows spend the year:
- Working on their own research projects
- Joining weekly seminars and speaker events
- Sharing lunch with other fellows three to four days a week
- Building connections across disciplines
Fields include:
- Behavioral and social sciences
- Law and medicine
- Philosophy and the humanities
- Selected practitioners with outstanding achievements and relevant experience
Important Dates
- Application deadline: 30 October 2026
- Decisions: By mid-February 2027
- Fellowship year: September 2027 (the day after Labor Day) to late May 2028
- Fellows can usually stay until the end of June
Who Can Apply?
- Holders of a PhD, a professional degree (such as a JD or MD), or equivalent professional standing
- At least 3–4 years past your doctorate (CASBS doesn't offer postdoc fellowships)
- Faculty members or independent researchers with a strong publication record
- Able to communicate clearly in English
- Willing to be in residence for the full year without other major commitments (no teaching appointments)
- International scholars are welcome but must be eligible for a US J-1 scholar visa
CASBS especially encourages scholars to apply after receiving tenure.
What You Get
- A stipend for first-time fellows, up to half your base salary, with a current cap of $83,000
- Fellows earning under $100,000 a year may receive more than 50% in some cases
- A housing subsidy and relocation support for non-local fellows, which can also cover family members
- A private study and full access to Stanford's academic community
- A year of uninterrupted research time
- A lifelong network of distinguished scholars
The stipend is designed to supplement sabbatical pay or other funding, so most fellows combine it with support from their home institution.
How to Apply
- Read the application guidelines, instructions and FAQ on the CASBS website.
- Prepare your project description, CV and other required materials.
- Talk to your home institution about sabbatical or matching funding.
- Submit your application through the online CASBS portal by 30 October 2026.
- A committee of past CASBS fellows reviews applications, and decisions are shared by mid-February 2027.
Simple Tips
- Propose a bold, original project. CASBS values ambitious, curiosity-driven ideas.
- Show how the year will make a difference to your work and your field.
- Plan your funding early. You'll usually need sabbatical pay or other support alongside the stipend.
- Highlight cross-disciplinary thinking. Fellows come from many fields and learn from each other.
- Check your J-1 visa eligibility early if you're an international scholar.
