AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award 2027 at the University of Sheffield (Fully Funded PhD)

Fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentships in arts and humanities at the University of Sheffield, UK. Tuition fees plus a UKRI stipend of £21,805 a year. Open to home and international students. Apply by December 14, 2026.

What is the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award?

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA) funds PhD researchers in the arts and humanities. The University of Sheffield has received this award to support postgraduate researchers in its Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Sheffield's studentships are part of the AHRC North/Northwest Hub, a partnership with nine other universities in the region. Funded researchers join this wider cohort and take part in shared training and activities.

About the University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield is a member of the Russell Group and is ranked among the world's top 100 universities. Its Faculty of Arts and Humanities is home to more than 200 PhD researchers and over two dozen research centres.

PhD researchers also get dedicated desk and social space at the Doctoral School Centre at the Jessop West site.

How to apply

The application has two parts:

Part 1: Apply for a PhD place

  1. Find a suitable supervisor and research area in one of the four schools.
  2. Prepare your research proposal.
  3. Submit your PhD study application through the University of Sheffield online application portal by December 14, 2026.
  4. Note your study application number. You'll need it for Part 2.

Part 2: Apply for funding

  1. Prepare your answers using the official funding application template.
  2. Complete the funding application form in one sitting, entering your study application number.
  3. Submit before 5:00 PM GMT on February 19, 2027.

How are candidates selected?

Applications first go to the relevant school for assessment. Shortlisted candidates are then nominated to a faculty panel, which meets in March 2027 to make the final selections.

Simple tips

  • Contact a potential supervisor early. A good fit between your project and their expertise makes a big difference.
  • Write a strong, focused research proposal. Be clear about your question, methods, and why your project matters.
  • Use the funding template to draft your answers before filling in the form, since it has to be completed in one go.
  • Don't miss the first deadline. You must apply for a PhD place by December 14 to be considered for funding.
  • International applicants: with only one place available, make your application as strong and polished as possible.
