About Maastricht University

Maastricht University (UM) is one of Europe's most international universities, located in the historic city of Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands. It's known for its Problem-Based Learning approach, where students work in small groups to solve real-world problems instead of just sitting through lectures. Its classrooms bring together students from all over the world.

What is the NL-High Potential Scholarship?

The UM NL-High Potential Scholarship is one of Maastricht University's most valuable awards for international students. Each academic year, it offers 18 full scholarships to highly talented students from outside the European Union who have been admitted to a master's programme at UM.

The scholarship combines two funding sources:

  • The High Potential Scholarship, funded by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund
  • The NL Scholarship, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch universities

Important dates

  • Programme applications open: October 1, 2026
  • Master's programme application deadline: December 10, 2026 (your full application file must be submitted and meet all admission requirements)
  • Scholarship application deadline: February 1, 2027
  • Study starts: September 2027

Important: there are two deadlines. You must apply for your master's programme first, by December 10, 2026, and then apply for the scholarship by February 1, 2027.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Full tuition fee waiver for your master's programme
  • A monthly stipend to help cover living costs in the Netherlands
  • Support for the standard duration of your programme (one or two years)

Stipend amounts may change for 2027–28, so check the official page for the latest figures before you apply.

Who can apply?

You must meet all of these requirements:

  • You hold the nationality of a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Suriname.
  • You don't hold dual nationality from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
  • You meet the requirements for a Dutch entry visa and residence permit.
  • You've applied to a participating full-time master's programme at Maastricht University for 2027–28 and submitted your full application file before December 10, 2026.
  • By the scholarship deadline of February 1, 2027, you've met all registration requirements, except legal residence, tuition payment, and a hard copy of your diploma.
  • You have excellent academic results. Check the official page for the exact grade requirement.
  • You agree to act as a UM ambassador during and after your studies, sharing your experience with future students.

If you already hold a residence permit for another Schengen country, it must be valid until at least September 2, 2027. Otherwise, you'll need to apply from your home country through the regular Dutch visa (MVV) process.
